Calhoun’s New Year’s Day 5k – Race Recap

Official Results:
44 minutes 58 seconds (beat my goal by 2 seconds)
14 minutes 29 seconds ( average pace).
741 out of 805 finishers

Waiting in the coldI had to get up pretty early to get to the race site since it was over an hour away. Which meant no New Years Eve partying for me. ( because I am such a huge partier and all) I left my house around 6 AM and got to the site around  7:15 AM. The race didn’t start until 9 AM but I wasn’t real sure of the area and the parking situations and I still had to pick up my race packet. So pretty much I got to wait around for close to 2 hours. My boss ended up doing this race with me since I couldn’t find anyone else so we sat around and chatted and drank Starbucks and people watched as people started showing up

Getting to the finish lineAnd if I haven’t mentioned it yet: it was cold. Like 25 degrees cold. I know some out there are running with ice crystals on their eyelashes  but not me. I finally decided to brave the porta potties and ran across someone I “knew”. I saw her and thought I had recognized her from some pictures online. It was none other than Tami. She is a fellow stamper, who like me hasn’t stamped in quite a long while. She finished a lot faster than me. Go girl.

Finally we headed to the start line and got started. I felt bad for Bradley. He’s a runner and sticking with me had to be an interesting experience. He was very encouraging and patient which I appreciated very much. So pretty much the whole way was run jog until I thought I was going to die and then walk. Repeat this more than a few times until done.

Finish LineI used my new Garmin Forerunner 10. I think I hit a pause button or something because a little bit of the race is missing. But it’s a pretty cool watch. You can upload your data to a website and it gives you all the statistics. It will be fun to compare as I go along and hopefully get better.

I met my 2 goals for the race:
1: Not come in last
2: To finish under 45 minutes

I won’t say that I am addicted to running or anything but my plan for the year is to try and run a 5K each month. I will just have to take it from there and see what happens.

Congratulations on achieving your goals! I think your plan to run one 5k a month is great, it is definitely easier to run when you have something you are working towards. I look forward to reading about your progress!
